Special thanks to our fine sponsors including The Saltwater Angler, The Padre Island Moon, and Gulf Coast Connections for publicity, the Corpus Christi Area Domino's Pizza locations for providing pizza, and manpower for the cleanup, Fishbites for the Fish'n Strips samples, HEB of Flour Bluff for providing water and other necessities, Roy's Bait and Tackle, to Smartshield Sunblock for providing free aloe vera based sunscreen, and to YOU the VOLUNTEERS who make it all happen!
The March 23rd. Billy Sandifer/SFCCI Big Shell Beach Cleanup was a genuine hoot, but then again the Big Shell Beach Cleanup always is. Approximately 150 volunteers gathered 25 1/2 tons of trash and removed it from the area and 6 miles of beach was restored to it's natural beauty. Shore Fishing and Casting Club International, TeamOso Hardcore Wadefishing Club, Coastal Shark Fishing Club, SCA Austin and Brush Country CCA members were present. Rocky Guerra of Roy's Bait and Tackle Outfitters furnished three trailers and spent his day picking up trash. Other fishing oriented businesses represented included Breakaway U.S.A. and "Fishbites." N. Padre Island's Boy Scout Troop 949 was present and the oil industry working on the island was represented by hardworking folks and vehicles from BNP Petroleum, Ainsworth Trucking and Glory Construction. The local Nat'l Guard furnished two large trucks available as needed for hauling walking volunteers into and out of the work area and aided in hauling trash out of the work area. Our hats off to our Nat'l Guard.Mr. Daniel Dain, DWD Pizza, Domino's Pizza NOT ONLY FURNISHED WONDERFUL PIZZAS FOR 150 people but Mr. Dain for the 2nd. year in a row showed up with a 4X4 truck and a large trailer and personally loaded and hauled bagged trash from the work area all day. AWESOME.
The local Flour Bluff H.E.B. donated a $250. certificate for purchasing water, snacks, water, sodas and paper towels for the event. "Smartshield" supplied all the volunteers with sunscreen. "Fishbites" donated a packet of their fine product to each volunteer and also supplied manpower and a vehicle. Gulf Coast Connections, Tom Nix's Saltwater Angler, The Padre Island Moon and the Corpus Christi Caller Times all publicized the event. Our Corpus Christi Caller Times outdoors writer, Mr. David Sikes, showed up with friends and a vehicle and worked hard as he has always done in the past. David Sikes also has proven invaluable with the planning of this event. Thank You David Sikes! A very special "Thank You" goes out to my co-conspirator, MR. TYLER THORSEN of Corpusfishing.com. A lot of the work that I get the credit for doing Tyler actually did and I would be overwhelmed without his help. Thanks Tyler.
Volunteers for this event specifically traveled here to attend this event from as far away as Florida. A few fine residents of N. Padre Island participated and there was no participation by any N. Padre Island Business. Interesting.
The cleanup area covered this year was exactly the same as last year and yet more people picked up about half the same amount of trash. Everyone worked just as hard; there simply was not as much trash. This event is making a difference. I commend all of the wonderful, hardworking folks who participated in the event this year and invite each of you to join us next year.Captain Billy L. Sandifer
